New Bedford Yacht Club's enviable Sailing School has been the start for many high school, collegiate, and All American sailors.


The Club's extensive waterfront facilities, along with quick access to optimum sailing conditions in Buzzards Bay, gives young sailors ages 5 to 18 a wonderful summer experience. A fleet of 420s, Optimists, O'pen Skiffs, and SUPS support the program, as do opportunities for big boat sailing.

The summer program runs June through August. New and aspiring sailors, experienced racers, and all skill levels in between are welcome. Instructors and race team coaches come from a wide variety of clubs and colleges and bring a welcome diversity of instruction.

The Sailing School operates with the generous support of the New Bedford Yacht Club Foundation. The Foundation was founded primarily to promote and develop education and instructional activities related to sailing at NBYC. For more information on the NBYC Foundation, please visit www.nbycf.org.

Mission

To provide a safe, challenging and educational sailing school

To promote seamanship, sportsmanship and a lifelong interest in sailing to young people in our community

To offer a cutting-edge program with up to date equipment, ranging from elementary sailing to competitive racing

The Sailing School is open to New Bedford Yacht Club members as well as non-members.

Members and their grandchildren have priority for acceptance into the program. Non-member grandchildren of members will be charged at the non-member rate.

Every effort will be made to accommodate all applicants. Applications become available in March. Classes do fill so return applications as soon as possible.

  • NBYC’s unique Seamanship and Keelboats class is a unique alternative for the younger sailor who isn’t interested in racing but wants to explore the area by water on a variety of boats.
  •  NBYC has an excellent fleet of C420s and Optimists that are race ready for your aspiring regatta participant! Applications for our race teams are available by emailing the Sailing Director
