      May 1 - Deadline for Summer Program refunds. After this date, refunds will be granted only if there is a sailor on the waitlist who is able to fill the spot. 


  • Morning Classes
    • Tiller Tots (Ages 5-6)

      Tiller Tots is our popular camp-style introduction to sailing. Geared toward children five-six years old, Tiller Tots includes a series of friendly, fun on-water and on-shore activities designed to introduce kids to the water safety and sailing. The class is run by a lead Instructor with the help of junior instructors to ensure the highest level of fun attention and safety. Tiller Tots must be confident in the water and will complete a swim check on the first day. Tiller Tots bring their own lunch, lifejacket and sunscreen. Parents are welcome to join the class for a BYO picnic lunch at noon daily on the NBYC lawn.

      M-F from 8:30am-12:00pm in one-week sessions.

      Little Mariners (Ages 6-7)

      This activity-packed morning class will introduce first-time sailors to boating and sailing in a fun and safe environment. Appropriate for children age 6 or 7, or who have completed Tiller Tots, 1st grade, or at the discretion of the Sailing School Director. Children sail together in Sonars (keelboats) which safely hold many students and one instructor. They will eventually graduate to small prams! Little Mariners must be comfortable in the water and will complete a swim check on the first day. Little Mariners bring their own lunch, lifejacket and sunscreen. Parents are welcome to join the class for a BYO picnic lunch at noon daily on the NBYC lawn.

      M-F from 8:30am-12:00pm in one-week sessions.

      Opti 1 (Ages 8+)

      Two weeks of morning sessions introduce children ages 8+ to sailing an 8-foot Optimist dinghy. Instruction includes rigging, launching, basic sailing, water safety and confidence in handling the small pram in all directions. Appropriate for children who are new or who have successfully completed Little Mariners, are at least 8 years old, or at the discretion of the Sailing School Director.

      M-F from 8:30am -1 2:00pm in two-week sessions.

      Opti 2 (Ages 8+)

      Sailors who have mastered Opti 1 can move to Opti 2 five mornings a week in two-week sessions. With a focus on water time, sailors will move quickly through a curriculum that concentrates on upwind sailing and transitions. Instruction includes more rigging, seamanship and boat care along with an introduction to racing basics in an Optimist.

      M-F from Monday - Friday 8:30am-12:00pm in  two-week sessions.

      Extended Day – Afternoon Activities! (Ages 5-10)

      The Sailing School offers an Extended Day afternoon program for ages 5-10. Children signed up for morning classes can add Extended Day with advanced registration.

      Extended Day is a fun, activities-based program led by instructors and specific staff. Depending on the number of sailors and weather, the class may stay ashore and build model boats, master seamanship skills, watch movies, or hit the water for sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, or paddle boarding. Extended Day is intended to give sailing school families an option to have their children safe and active at NBYC for the full day. Extended Day has supervised lunch hour from 12:00-1:00pm. Space is limited!

      M-F from 1:00pm-4:30pm.

      420 Learn to Sail (Ages 10+)

      420 LTS is for beginner sailors who are too old (13+), or too big (100 lbs+) to sail in an Optimist dinghy. The class will teach sailors sailing basics in a two-person 14’ dinghy. Beginner techniques include reading the wind, rigging, nomenclature, launching, and sailing in all angles to the wind. Sailors will have a chance to master both skipper and crew skills, including use the trapeze and spinnaker.

      M-F from 8:30am-12:00pm in two-week sessions.

      420 Collegiate (Ages 12+)

      This class is for experienced sailors who weigh at least 100 pounds, have successfully completed 420 LTS, Opti 3 or Green Fleet or have equivalent sailing qualifications. The class teaches sailors collegiate racing techniques in the in the two-person 420. This course will prepare sailors for high school and college style racing. Sailors will be exposed to both skippering and crewing. 

      M-F from 8:30am-12:00pm in two week sessions.

  • Afternoon Classes
    • Keelboats and Seamanship ( Ages 12-16)

      *NEW* This course will teach the basics of seamanship and keelboat sailing. Sailing instruction will be done in sonars and our J80. Classes will be structured based on the US Sailing Junior Big Boat Sailing Program curriculum that focuses on teamwork, basic sailing elements and elementary sailing skills. 

      Monday-Friday 1pm-4:30pm

      Opti Green Fleet (Ages 8+)

      Designed for sailors who have successfully completed Opti 2, this class prepares sailors for racing the Optimist sailboat. In the shadow of the Opti Race Team, Green fleeters will learn more advanced boat handling, rigging techniques and the basics of sailboat racing, from rules to racing procedures. Interested sailors will be encouraged to participate in Green Fleet (beginner level racing) at up to four local regattas throughout the summer. Participants are invited to participate in the NBYC Junior Championship Series on Thursday evenings from 4:30pm-6:30pm. Opti Green is offered in 2 four-week sessions.

      Opti Race (Ages 9-15)

      Opti Race is for motivated Optimist sailors who have successfully completed the Opti 3/Green Fleet and wish to learn more advanced racing skills through teamwork, drills and actual racing in a single-handed Optimist. As representatives of NBYC, the Opti Race team will compete in approximately four local and regional regattas. Opti Race is offered in 2 four-week sessions.

      M-Th from 1:00-4:30pm

      420 Race (Ages 12+)

      420 Race is intended for experienced 420 sailors who have successfully completed 420 LTR or have equivalent sailing qualifications. Curriculum includes sail care, trim for speed, boat maintenance, racing rules and tactics, sportsmanship, regatta preparation and team racing with area clubs. As representatives of NBYC, the 420 Race team will compete in approximately four local and regional regattas. 420 Race is offered in 2 four-week sessions.
