Little Mariners
- This class will introduce first-time sailors to the joy of sailing in a fun and safe environment. It is available to children who have completed the first grade and/or will be seven years old by June 22, 2009. It will be held in Mercuries (keelboats), which safely hold three or four students and one instructor.
Little Mariners meet Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8:30am-12:00pm.
Opti 1A
- Opti 1 is for beginner sailors who have completed the third grade and/or will be nine years old by August 31, 2009. the class is designed to introduce young sailors to the Optimist. Children who are new to the program or who have completed less than two sessions of Little Mariners would benefit from participation in this class. Knowledge of the boat, rigging, basic sailing, water safety and confidence in handling all points of sailing are emphasized.
Opti 1A meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings from 8:30am-12:00pm.
Opti 2
- Opti 2 is designed for sailors who have successfully completed the Opti I class. This class will move quickly through the curriculum with a concentration on upwind sailing and will introduce the basics of racing an Optimist.
Opti 2 meets Monday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 1:00 – 4:30 PM. Participants in this class may, with permission from their instructor and Program Director, race in the Junior Championship series from 4:30 – 6:15 PM Thursday evenings if desired.
Opti 3/Learn to Race
- This class is designed for students who have successfully completed Opti 2 and wish to pursue an interest in racing Optimists.
Opti 3/Learn to Race promotes more advanced sailing skills with a focus on racing and meets Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 1:00 to 4:30PM.
420 Learn to Sail
- 420 Learn to Sail is for sailors who have successfully completed the Opti3/Learn to Race class or who have equivalent sailing qualifications (students’ weights are also taken into consideration). The class is designed to teach young sailors how to sail a two-person 420, including how to roll tack, keep the boat flat, and how to and right the boat after capsizing. Some students may elect to take Opti Race and 420 Learn to Sail at the same time.
420 Learn to Sail meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings from 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM.
Sailing Adventures
- This class is designed for sailors of all ability who will be at least 12 years oled by August 31, 2009. Sailing Adventures will be taught in four two-week sessions. The Monday and Wednesday classes will be dedicated to learning and mastering the basics of sailing in Rhodes 19s and other larger sailboats. Special emphasis will be placed on making sailors more comfortable with all aspects of sailing including driving and crewing in a variety of boats. At least one Friday each session (weather permitting), sailors will voyage around Buzzards Bay aboard a cruising sailboat and will be expected to participate all the sailing and navigation necessary.
Sailing Adventures will meet Monday and Wednesday mornings from 8:30am-12:00pm and Friday all day from 8:30am-4:30pm.
Opti Race
- Opti Race is for sailors who have successfully completed the Opti 3/LTR class and wish to learn more advanced racing skills through drills and actual racing in a single-handed Optimist. These racers will travel as a team and compete in local and regional regattas. Sailors enrolled in this class are required to have their own Optimist. NBYC is offering four Optimists for rent to sailors on the Opti Race Team. The cost for the charter is $225 for the summer. Please contact the Program Director for more details and availability.
Opti Race meets Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 1:00 to 4:30P M and Thursday from 1:00 to 6:30 PM.
420 C Team
- Sailors who have participated in Opti Race or who have been in 420 Learn to Sail for at least four sessions are eligible for 420 C Team. Recognizing that sailors in this class will have already learned a great deal about racing, the curriculum will focus on advanced 420 boat handling and boat speed as well as tactics. Sailors will get a chance to skipper and crew, and will use the trapeze and spinnaker. The 420 C Team will become proficient in the racing rules of sailing and will learn the fundamentals of team racing.
420 C Team meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings from 8:30am-12:00pm
420 Race
- 420 Race is intended for experienced 420 racers who have successfully completed 420 C Team or who have equivalent sailing qualifications. The curriculum includes sportsmanship, sail reim for speed, regatta preparation, team racing with area Clubs, boat maintenance, racing rules, and tactics. As representaties of NBYC, the 420 Racing Team will compete in local and regional regattas.
420 Race meets Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM.
Laser Race Team
- The prerequisites for this class include participation in Opti Race, 420 Race or at least four sessions of 420 Learn to Sail. Students must use their own Laser in class. Students may sail Full Rig, Laser Radial, and Laser 4.7. The curriculum for this class includings learning how to rig, sail, and race Lasers. Special emphasis will be put on learning Laser sail controls and upwind and downwind sailing techniques. Sailors from this class will be encouraged to race their boats in local Laser regatts.
Laser Race meets on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8:30AM-12:00PM and Friday afternoons from 1:00pm-4:30pm.
