Carolyn Handy Award
Sportsmanship

The Arthur Francis family first gave this award in 1955 in memory of Carolyn Francis Handy. A member of the New Bedford Yacht Club and an avid racer in her Beetle Cat, she was tragically killed along with her son, Michael, and daughter, Martha, in a train accident.

Rothschild Award
Sportsmanship and Seamanship

This award was first given in 1960 in honor of Walter Rothschild, who was the founder of the Junior Sailing Program at New Bedford Yacht Club. He was an avid sailor and racer, and was often seen giving sailing tips to the young sailors. This award is given to a young sailor who displays both good seamanship and sportsmanship. Sportsmanship, by definition, is the demonstration of fairness, generosity, and the ability to be a good loser as well as a graceful winner. Seamanship, by definition, is the art or skill of handling, working or navigating a ship.

Nicholson Award

Fred Nicholson was a former manager of NBYC. He was at the club for twenty years. He has been described by all who knew him as a yachtsman of superior seamanship; which, by definition, is the art or skill of handling, working or navigating a ship.

Herb Wessling Award
Initiative

Herb Wessling began the Sailing School Program teaching in one tens and tech dinghies. He was in charge of the program for many years. His mission was to teach disciplines and traditions of the sea. His initiative helped shape the future of the Sailing School Program. This award is given to a young sailor who demonstrates outstanding initiative.

Phillip Bernert Award

Phillip Bernert was a long time employee of the New Bedford Yacht Club. He was a self-starter and was willing to do anything asked of him. Unfortunately, his life was cut short by a tragic accident, but his spirit lives on through the young sailors and members in our program

Fortier Award
All-Round Contribution

This award was started in 1987 in recognition of the contributions Anne Louise Fortier had made to the Sailing School. She was the chairperson of the Sailing School at that time, and went on to become the first female commodore of the NBYC. It was her desire that a young sailor be recognized for his/her exemplary service to the New Bedford Yacht Club.

Harry Kaller Award
Team Spirit

Harry Kaller was a long time member of the NBYC. He served on many committees, especially the Race Committee and Sailing School Committee. Sailing was his love, and learning to sail correctly was very important to him. He was an avid supporter of the Sailing School Program. This award is given in his honor to the student who demonstrates a passion for the sport.
