NBYC Hurricane Policy

The safety of a vessel is the sole responsibility of the owner at all times, including storms and hurricanes. The owner should make preparations for the safety of the vessel well in advance of such events.  A “hurricane watch” is issued if winds greater than 74 mph are expected regionally within 36 hours.  When issued, the owner must prepare to have the vessel removed from Club property.  A “hurricane warning” is issued if winds greater than 74 mph are expected locally within 24 hours. When issued, the owner must remove the vessel from Club property.  The owner must also remove the vessel from Club property when otherwise requested by the Dockmaster or management as deemed appropriate to secure and protect Club property and equipment.  If the owner of the vessel is a slipholder, the Club must be provided with the name, address and telephone number of an alternate person who is prepared to carry out the slipholder’s responsibility for removing the vessel when the slipholder is unavailable or otherwise not able to do so.  The slipholder is required to provide such information to the Club annually on the seasonal slip contract or renewal form.  If a vessel is not removed from Club property when required, the Dockmaster and staff will, at the owners expense, take all action necessary to remove the vessel as deemed appropriate to secure and protect Club property and equipment. The slipholder agrees to hold the Club harmless from and against any and all liability for damages to the vessel and otherwise in the event the vessel is not removed as required. For reference puposes only and as additional information for Club members, a “Boat Owners’ Guide to Storm Preparation” is available.
