The following perpetual awards and trophies are awarded annually at NBYC's Race Awards dinner each October.

  • Demarest Lloyd Trophy
    • The perpetual trophy in memory of Demarest Lloyd and his son, Demarest Lloyd, Jr., was donated by the Lloyd family in 1950. Both father and son were enthusiastic sailors. Demarest Lloyd successfully campaigned his yawl ANGELICA in the early 1900's. He repeated this success with his subsequent yacht MUSKETEER, which he raced and cruised until his death in 1937.

Demarest Lloyd, Jr. began racing O boats at age 12. He went on to sail in the S-boat class where his ARROW was a well-respected competitor in Buzzards Bay. Shortly after graduating from college, he joined the navy and served as a fighter pilot with the Pacific fleet. He was killed in action over Guam on June 12, 1944.

From 1950 to 1986 it was awarded to the winner of the NBYC Memorial Day Race. Since 1987 it has been awarded to the overall winner of the June "Mini-Cruise" Race.

  • Frank Vining Smith Trophy
    • In 1932, then Rear Commodore Frank Vining Smith, a famous and accomplished marine artist, donated his painting "The Charles W. Morgan on the Grounds" as a trophy for an annual race to be known as the Whalers' Race and to be raced "by boats of a wholesome cruising type."

The race, a 100-mile course around Block Island and back, has been sailed every year since its inception, except during World War II. The name of the boat, owner, and club of the overall PHRF winner of the Whalers' Race is engraved on a plague on the frame of the beautiful painting.

  • Narada Perpetual Challenge Cup
    • A wealthy Baltimore coal merchant, Henry Walters, commissioned Tiffany & Co. to fashion a silver urn engraved with the name and likeness of his favorite steam yacht, NARADA. The cup was then donated to the New York Yacht Club for the 1897 cruise and won by Percy Chubb in his famous sloop, VIGILANT.

In 1940, Mr. Chubb's son, Hendon Chubb, gave the trophy to the New Bedford Yacht Club "to be raced for annually or otherwise under such rules or regulations and in such regattas as may be determined by NBYC."

Since 1977, the Narada Cup has been awarded annually to the winner of Class B of the Whalers' Race and in 1996 it was amended to be awarded to the winner of the Double-Handed Class of the Whalers’ Race.

  • The George B. Knowles, Jr. Trophy
    • Edith P. Knowles donated the trophy in 1985 in memory of her husband, George B. Knowles, Jr. Mr. Knowles was the Commodore of the New Bedford Yacht Club from 1960-1962 and one of its ardent sailors. The trophy is a beautiful depiction in scrimshaw of two whaling ships. One of these, the TAMERLANE, belonged to the Knowles family. George B. Knowles, Jr.'s own boats also bore the name TAMERLANE.

The trophy was awarded from 1985 to 1989 to the overall winner of the fall Whalers' Race. Since 1990, it had been awarded occasionally and on a merit basis for outstanding achievement in racing within or outside of the Club. In 1996 it was amended to be awarded yearly to a New Bedford Yacht Club member who has best-exemplified sailing excellence through achievement during the previous year. The recipient will be chosen by vote of the NBYC Race Committee and the winner will have their name and the boat name added to the Knowles Trophy. The winner will also receive a framed scrimshaw replica of the trophy.

  • Priority Award
    • The Priority Trophy was established in memory of DJ Walsh. DJ loved racing and while occasionally a skipper, he was a regular crew member competing in Club racing. He embodied the best characteristics of a good shipmate, providing sailing skill, a willing attitude and good companionship.

To honor his memory and to recognize the talents of other racing crew members, the Priority Trophy is awarded at Race Awards night to a NBYC racing crew member selected by the Race Committee from nominations submitted by racing skippers. This crew member shall have sailed for several years as a regular crew member on a racing yacht and shall have demonstrated by his or her skill, loyalty and personal conduct, the same qualities which made DJ such a special sailor.
